/ARTICLESgun safety statisticsGun supporters will argue that gun violence has decreased over the years, and overall, this is true. Statistics show that since the all time high in 1904, gun fatalities have decreased 94% over the past decades. However, we have seen a slight increase in number of death by firearm since 2002, but if we look at the big picture, we can conclude that gun violence has decreased tremendously over the years due to community efforts and some governmental intervention. We can see that Gun safety education may play a huge role in helping to keep gun violence under control. Gun and firearm fatalities are only 0.5% of all accidental deaths while motor vehicle accidents account for over 35% of all fatalities in the United States. Poisoning ranks second at 22%. This statistic does not account for purposeful deaths by firearms and also excludes deaths due to war, but gun fatalities have dropped dramatically since the early 1900's and leveled off a bit despite a large increase in gun ownership and gun purchase. Law makers and local authorities have seen success in eradicating gun violence using multi-angled approaches. According to the National Institute of Justice, "a successful intervention will have elements of federal-local law enforcement collaboration, community involvement, targeted intervention tactics and continuous program evaluation," and by keeping people (especially children) aware of the proper use guns and safety procedures, it is more likely that gun fatality rates will never reach the peaks as seen earlier in the beginning of the 20 century. Another big issue that is correlated with unnecessary gun violence is the illicit supply and demand of the marketplace for illegal firearms. This issue is less of a community issue than it is a problem for the federal government to handle. The ongoing issue of Gun safety is a complicated one. Some law makers believe that gun registration can help to decrease the amount of gun violence in America by attempting to parallel the decrease in motor vehicle deaths after motor vehicle registration was introduced to the system. Statistics show a dramatic increase in gun fatalities in the early 1990's, and some argue that the introduction of gun awareness and Gun safety programs correlate precisely with the huge drops in gun deaths around the beginning of 1995. However, even though statistics show that after vehicle licensing and registration became mandatory, there was a 37% decrease in vehicle fatalities between the years 1968-1991 – gun crime decreased a whopping 50% without gun control and licensing. For the moment, our community and governmental gun control system is more or less effective. Community education of Gun safety is probably the surest bet for gun fatality prevention, but government crack downs on illegal transportation and distributing of weapons also plays a role. Guns and other weapons will always find a way into our society, but it is up to our community to mandate the proper social rules of self responsibility and self defense. QUICK LINKS |
